ROYAL DOCKS BREWING COLLABORATES WITH HIGH BANK DISTILLERY TO CREATE SEASONAL STOUT

COLUMBUS, OH — What is better than beer and whiskey? Beer aged in a whiskey barrel…duh.

Royal Docks Brewing Co. has teamed up with High Bank Distillery Co. to release specialty cans of their Whiskey War Barrel Aged Stout called Devil’s Cut.

What is Devil’s Cut? Classically, devil’s cut is referring to the whiskey that is left behind after harvesting a barrel for bottling. There is whiskey still absorbed in the wood of the barrel that can be extracted through additionally aging another product in that same barrel (in this case, a delicious Royal Docks porter). This infuses that additional product with a wonderful whiskey and oak influence.

Co-founder and Master Distiller Adam Hines explains how the two brands came together.

Royal Docks is located in my hometown of Canton, OH. I have been a huge fan of their beer since they opened (it’s always on tap at our Grandview location), and when they approached me to to collaborate, I couldn’t have been more excited. After 20 months of aging in our Whiskey War barrels, we all agreed, it was finally complete and ready for everyone else to enjoy.

John Bikis, co-founder of Royal Docks, discusses what makes this product unique.

Our Master Brewer, Dave Sutula, specifically created this porter from the Whiskey War Mash Bill. When most breweries second age their beer in whiskey barrels, it’s for a period of 3-12 months. Just like aging a good whiskey, it’s done when it’s done. This beer continued to get more a more complex as it aged, with flavors such as caramel cream covered green apples (yum!). We finally called it quits at 20 months, which is exceptionally long for a whiskey aged beer, but so worth it.

The 16 oz cans will be sold in 4-packs for $19.99 at a 8.6% ABV. This is a limited release product and can be purchased, while supplies last, in person at High Bank’s Grandview location (Columbus, OH) or Royal Docks Brewing Co. Taproom (Canton, OH) starting Thursday, October 27th.
